FATF/CFATF
Curaçao is a member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and its regional counterpart, the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF).
The FATF is the global watchdog for money laundering and terrorist financing. It establishes international standards designed to prevent these illicit activities and mitigate the harm they pose to society.
The CFATF is an organization of Caribbean Basin states that have committed to implementing coordinated measures to combat criminal money laundering. It was established following meetings held in Aruba (May 1990) and Jamaica (November 1992).
The CFATF Secretariat monitors member compliance through:
- Self-assessment of the implementation of FATF Recommendations.
- Ongoing mutual evaluations of members.
- Coordination and participation in training and technical assistance programs.
- Biannual plenary meetings for technical representatives.
- Annual Ministerial meetings.
FATF RECOMMENDATIONS
The FATF’s 40 Recommendations are the global standards for combating money laundering (ML), terrorist financing (TF), and proliferation financing (PF) providing a comprehensive framework for countries and financial institutions, covering risk assessment, customer due diligence, reporting suspicious transactions, beneficial ownership transparency, and international cooperation to stop illicit financial flows.
